El grupo GICO-UCM es pionero a nivel mundial en diseño, síntesis, caracterización y aplicaciones fotónicas de vidrios fotopolímeros con base sol-gel. Los trabajos han merecido eco mundial en prensa científica y genérica: P. Ball, Memories are made of glasses, Nature News, 14 March 2001; M. Hawk, The light fantastic, Nature, Vol. 422, pp. 556-558 (2003); The New York Times. La colaboración con el Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cinetíficas, National Research Council of Canada y Grupo de Dinámica Molecular UCM es altamente fructífero. Se desarrollan potentes líneas de investigación de proyección internacional dentro del campo de ciencia de materiales y fotónica.
