Geomonumental Route The Applied Petrology for Heritage Conservation Research Group, from the Geosciences Institute IGEO (CSIC-UCM) performs a Geomonumental Route for students of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UCM. The completion of this activity allows connecting several UCM research groups belonging to the Heritage cluster which deal with the study and conservation of cultural assets from different perspectives.

The Geomonumental Routes is an initiative undertaken by the Applied Petrology for Heritage Conservation research group, from the Geosciences Institute IGEO (CSIC-UCM), whereby heritage tours showing the stone materials that have been studied by the aforementioned group are made. The route accomplished, "Traditional building stone in Madrid monuments", attends to buildings materials, mainly natural stone, that shapes emblematic buildings of the city of Madrid, such as the Arabic Wall, the Almudena Cathedral or the Royal Palace. The route chiefly analyzes the type of traditional stone selected for the heritage buildings of the city, the location of the geological formations and/or the quarries of provenance, the decay forms these materials shown, the main agents that accelerate such decay and some of the restoration and/or conservation works carried out on them.

The completion of this route aims to bring the students of the Restoration Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UCM the Madrid built heritage from the point of view of the building materials that shape it, enhancing its scientific knowledge to improve the respect and appreciation of cultural and geological heritage.

This initiative increases the value of the CEI Campus Moncloa Heritage Cluster, as it enables directly and on-site to present the important role of the science for the understanding of the behavior of stone materials and their interaction with the agents involved in their decay. Also is a meeting forum for geologists, biologists, chemists, architects, historians, restorers and conservators to pool its knowledge and concerns in addressing the study of materials that make up the cultural heritage.
