Summary
Piezoelectric materials are used for a variety of actuator and sensor applications; with the most common material being Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT). However, environmental concerns have prompted a search for lead-free alternatives. Inducing a preferred orientation (texture) is one method to improve the piezoelectric performance.
Piezoelectric materials have two forms of texture, ferroelastic and crystallographic, that contributes to the total preferred orientation. Crystallographic texture is induced during sample processing, while ferroelastic texture is induced using post processing such as electrical poling.
Unlike crystallographic texture, ferroelastic texture has an upper bound equaling the multiplicity of a specific pole. In this talk I will introduce the connection between directional properties and preferred orientation and describe the implications of our results for performance of piezoelectrics
