On 26 November 2009 the Secretary-General of Universities granted the qualification of Campus of International Excellence (CIE) to the project CIE Campus Moncloa : The Power of Diversity. The project is based on an agreement between the Universidad Complutense and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid whose aim is to harness the potential in education and research of the most important universities in Spain.

The UCM and the UPM share the same territorial area. However, they never thought before of the possibility of establishing a joint work programme for the benefit of both universities. As it said in the declaration of principles for the project, ”œharmonious aggregation of both universities will allow to convert the campus into an international reference in research, education and innovation by acting as a catalyst for the cultural life in Madrid”. Although, the project is based in Madrid, it also includes other campuses outside the urban environment as Somosaguas Campus.

The research areas of the programme include specific actions aimed at achieving the teaching and research excellence based on joint work. This work should have the highest level of transparency by the involvement of institutions and companies in our project.

The CIE also has an action plan which includes the improvement of facilities such as libraries, data and communication networks, adaptation to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), recovery plans for the campus, building rehabilitation, and employment programmes. There are priority actions which are the creation of the School of Government and the International Centre for studies about Latin America.

The governance system of the campus is built upon four work areas (teaching, sustainability, R+D, dissemination and visibility) that are coordinated by agents of the UCM and the UPM.

The CIE is a project for people without exclusion. The aim is to build an environment of international excellence for future generations. All of us are called to collaborate in this task. The current government believes in the project and is excited about it. They will make an effort to achieve the goals. There are still many things to do but they are happy to rely on the university community. Thanks to all for helping to build the future.
