On the occasion of International Day of Monuments and Sites, The Applied Petrology for Heritage Conservation Research Group, from the Geosciences Institute IGEO (CSIC-UCM) and belonging to the Heritage Cluster awareness society about the need to protect cultural and natural heritage.
The International Day for Monuments and Sites was proposed by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) on April 18, 1982 and approved by the General Assembly of UNESCO in 1983. The aim is to promote awareness about the diverse cultural heritage of humanity, their vulnerability and the efforts required for their protection and conservation.
Besides the launching of the notice Battles of the stone , a video made by Communication Department of CSIC, has been recorded including part of the activity undertaken by the aforementioned group, which coordinates the Petrophysics Laboratory (certified by AENOR under Standard Quality Management System EN ISO 9001:2008), belonging to the Laboratory Network Science and Technology Heritage Conservation (RedLabPat) of the Cluster Heritage.
The video focuses on the evaluation of the main decay agents and alteration mechanisms that occur in stone materials, the assessing of the most suitable conservation techniques as well, according to the petrophysical characteristics of such materials and the environment where they are located.
