José Ygnacio Pastor Caño has recently been appointed as the UPM coordinator for the cluster of Materials for the Future who replaces Jaime Gálvez by the Rector at the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, Carlos Conde.

Jose Ygnacio Pastor received his PhD in Physics (Materials Physics) from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He is been attaching as a researcher and a professor to the Department of Materials Science of the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid since 1988. Pastor is currently the deputy director of this Department.

His main areas of interest include the study of mechanical behavior and the fracture of advanced structural materials. Particularly, he is studying the mechanical behavior of materials for energy (fiber-reinforced ceramic, monolithic ceramic materials, eutectic ceramic materials, high critical temperature superconductors, refractory alloys of W and Ti, nanocomposites, ferrites) and biological materials and biomaterials. He also researches on microstructural and fractographic materials.

Throughout his scientific career, Jose Ygnacio has participated in the development of diverse experimental techniques in the international area for the characterization of mechanical properties in extreme conditions of work, in inert and aggressive environments, and under monotonous and cyclic loads.

He has published over one hundred forty scientific and technical publications in national and international on outreach journals and books apart from company reports. He has presented over one hundred thirty communications in seminars and scientific meetings at national and international level.

J. Ygnacio Pastor has been received numerous national scientific photography awards and has collaborated with over seventy research projects funded by public entities and companies.

His teaching activities are focused on Physics and Structure and Material Behavior for students of, Civil and Land Engineering, Materials Engineering, Masters and PhDs.

He has also collaborated in various Spanish universities and specialization advanced courses. Likewise he received Educational Innovation Award from the UPM in 2010 and the Teaching Excellence Award in 2011.

It is remarkable to mention that Ygnacio is the organizer of the International Seminars of Frontiers in Material Science, which is retransmitted weekly for Spanish and Ibero-american students.
