Concretes provide an excellent protection to reinforcing rods in civil works due to the high alkalinity of the pore fluid. This makes that steel remains in state passive. However, the start of the steel corrosion processes embedded in concrete can be given by the breach of the passive layer and/or alkalinity reduction.
