Colonizing new worlds (Eva Mª Rivas Fernández). Agri-Food & Health

Yeast bounds with different cells of the same specie regarless their origin and that permit it to colonize new worlds. The yeast Zygosaccharomyces bailii has a wordwide distribution and is often isolated from acidified spoiled foods (i.e mayonaise). Its sexual reproduction is by ascospores. The image shows some conjugated ascus with ascospores as well as the conjugation bridge. Technical data: Collage of stained yeast Zygosaccharomyces bailii cells with safranine (red) and "in vivo" preparation. Differential Interference contrast Microscopy or Nomarsky (DIC)x 1000.
